The quadrennial FIFA World Cup football (soccer) tournament is one of the biggest draws in the world of sports, particularly in Brazil, where football is ingrained into the national culture. The 2014 FIFA World Cup games will be held in 12 host cities throughout Brazil. To support over half a million people who will travel to Brazil for the games, Otis is providing 174 elevators and escalators to seven FIFA World Cup stadiums as well as São Paulo’s international airport. Otis, the world’s leading manufacturer and maintainer of people-moving products, is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
Brazil recently constructed five new stadiums and significantly modernized seven existing stadiums throughout 12 cities, from Porto Alegre in the south to Manaus in the north. Elevadores Otis Ltda was awarded contracts for seven of the stadiums, providing elevators and escalators to help simplify attendees; mobility: Arena Dunas in Rio Grande do Norte, Estádio Fonte Nova in Bahia, Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto (widely known as Mineirão) in Minas Gerais, Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, Arena Pernambuco in Pernambuco, Arena Corinthians in São Paulo and Arena Amazônia in Amazonas.
In each stadium, the elevators will rely on Otis’ ReGenTM drives, which capture the energy normally wasted during elevator braking and normal operation, and feed it back into the building’s electrical grid for use by other systems. In addition, some stadiums will use the Web-based EMS Panorama™ elevator management system, which enables building staff to monitor, control, report on and manage elevators in real time.
The city of São Paulo – the country’s largest city, which also ranks among the most populous in the world – is slated to host the Opening Match of the FIFA World Cup at Arena de São Paulo. The city’s Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) has construction works in progress that will increase passenger flow capacity in the coming years. To further facilitate passenger comfort, 22 Otis escalators and elevators will be installed in Terminals 1 and 2, and an additional 53 Otis Gen2® elevators will be installed in the newly-added Terminal 3, which will open in May. The award-winning line of Gen2 elevator systems are more energy efficient than conventional systems, and the unit’s flat, polyurethane-coated steel belts and gearless machine do not require any additional lubrication, making the system cleaner for the environment.
“This is the second-ever time that the FIFA World Cup tournament will be held in football-enthused Brazil, and there is enormous anticipation and excitement throughout the country to accommodate so many fans and tourists,” said Luis Molina, managing director, Otis Brazil and regional vice president, Otis Latin America Area. “We are thrilled to play a role in this year’s FIFA World Cup games.”
