United Technologies, Otis China Establish Relief Fund for Firefighters Impacted by Tianjin Explosion

Multi-year commitment supports firefighters’ families and safety education programs

In response to the tragic explosions in the Tianjin Economic Development Area (TEDA) on August 12, United Technologies Corporation (UTC) and its subsidiary, Otis Elevator (China) Investment Co., Ltd. (Otis China), have established a relief fund of RMB2 million to support impacted firefighters and their families, and deliver safety education programs reducing losses in future disaster situations. Otis is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

The UTC/Otis China Relief Fund will be managed by the China Women’s Development Foundation, which will be responsible for distributing financial and material aid to impacted firefighters, as well as their families. The funds will be used to cover the pension payments, medical expenses, and living expenses of the affected firefighters.

“United Technologies is committed to supporting communities in need, especially in times of disaster,” said UTC President and Chief Executive Officer Gregory Hayes. “Losses suffered in the TEDA explosions hit close to home for many of our employees, customers and their families. UTC’s contribution to the China Women’s Development Foundation is made with the deepest sympathies and a dedication to the recovery of all those affected.”

In addition to the support of Tianjin firefighter families, the newly established UTC/Otis China Relief Fund will support the development and implementation of school and community-based safety education programs. Hands-on activities and disaster preparedness materials will be developed to assist children and adults in understanding what to do in natural or other types of disaster situations.

“All of us at United Technologies are saddened by the tragic event in Tianjin, and our condolences go out to those affected and their families,” said Perry Zheng, president, UTC Building and Industrial Systems China. “With our long term commitment to the region and all of China, we hope that the UTC/Otis China Relief Fund can help alleviate those affected and support rebuilding the TEDA community.”

“Our hearts go out to all the firefighters and their families affected by this incident,” said Tony Black, president, Otis Elevator (China) Investment Co., Ltd. “As the subsidiary of one of the first foreign companies to enter China, Otis China has made Tianjin its home for over 30 years and we hope to help the community overcome this difficult time.”
